Alex Katz

Geboren am 24. Juli 1927 in Brooklyn, New York, ist Alex Katz ein renommierter Maler aus den Vereinigten Staaten. Sein Schaffen zeichnet sich durch eine Zugehörigkeit zum modernen Realismus und der Pop Art aus. Während ein Großteil seiner Werke Porträts darstellt, widmete er sich auch der Darstellung von Landschaften und Architektur. Katz wurde als Sohn von russisch-jüdischen Einwanderern geboren und wuchs im New Yorker Stadtteil Queens auf. Sein Vater war Kaufmann, während seine Mutter eine Bühnenschauspielerin war. Zwischen 1946 und 1949 studierte Alex Katz an der Cooper Union Art School in New York, einer Kunstakademie, die sich an der französischen Avantgarde orientierte. Anschließend setzte er seine Ausbildung bis 1950 an der Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine, fort.

His first solo exhibition in 1954 at the Roko Gallery in New York was disappointing. In 1960 and 1964 he designed sets and costumes for the Paul Taylor Dance Company's performances at the Spoleto Festival. In 1972 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his painting. In 1994 Alex Katz was accepted as a member of the National Academy of Design. In the same year, a visiting professorship was established at Cooper Union Art School, funded by the sale of ten paintings donated by Katz. In April 2001, Alex Katz held a fellowship as a visiting artist at the American Academy in Berlin. He has also been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1988. He currently lives in New York and Maine.
